If you’re like me and you like to wear your hair in a vintage hairstyle, looking for inspiration on what exactly you want that look to be can be a bit overwhelming. There are many photos out there and some can seem darn right impossible and very intimidating.
How to Combat This?
I like to use inspiration of real life women of the specific time period I’m going for. Why? Because they seem more achievable. If Betty with 2 kids, a husband at war and home-front work can throw a victory roll or 2 in her, why can’t Liz who works from home do something similar? ALSO I love when I see frizzy sets, and not perfect hair because once again this is REALITY! A photo of a movie star with loads of help to make her hair look like perfection is well stunning to look at but for most of us, hard to achieve.

So for today’s post I want to showcase Real Life Photos of women in the 1940s and how they wore their hair. Maybe this will inspire you to jump into vintage hairstyles or try a new look on your next night out.
Happy browsing and experimenting (P.S. at the end of this post I will share links to great tutorials & blogs posts to help you out)!

The girl on the left is how my hair usually looks after I get tired of brushing it out from a set and frankly she looks adorable! So the lesson here is, sometimes just leave it because it works.

Frizz Frizz Frizz! See everyone it was not always the perfection you see on Instagram and in classic movie star photos, women had frizz and they embraced it. Why? Looking good was mandatory to help with moral but helping the boys overseas was even more of an important cause. So bring on the frizz!

Of course if we are talking real life photos from the 1940s we cannot forget the look of women working IN the factories.
The 2 photos below are of “Veronica Foster the Bren Gun Girl: Canada’s Original Rosie the Riveter“. She is wearing a kerchief in the first image and demonstrating how to wear it in the second one (the kerchief protects the hair from being caught in machinery).

Cute photos! The nuisance part was making your hair curly in the first place, in the era before hair dryers.
Sleeping in curlers for hours and hours. Ouch! I still do that because it gives a better curl and stays longer but does not make it fun ๐ Thanks for dropping by Elinor!
Thanks for keeping it real. It’s a good reminder when we’re striving for vintage perfection.
No problem! I have been feeling a bit frustrated lately with all the perfection I have been seeing online and I needed a reminder that it was truly not like that for most women.
Loved looking at all these photos.
Glad you enjoyed them Kate-Em!
This pictures of real women are stunning. Thank you for sharing it.
I curl my hair and fix it with bobbypins. Then after the night I brush it out and see how the curls are. I don’t brush a lot but use bobbypins to fit ita little.
Fantastic tips! Bobbypins are really super tools and make sleeping so much easier (I too will do that as well). Thanks for stopping by ๐

Liz, is it just my imagination or do the women in the 40’s look prettier than women in the 50’s? I am 76 years young ( born in 48) by the way so I have seen a lot of fashions but growing up hearing all about the 40’s from my folks I “live” in the 40’s myself. My home looks like you were stepping back in time and folks love coming for a cup of tea with me. I love that era so much, not the war of course but the togetherness of folks that does not seem to exist now. Love your emails by the way. I journal and love to print off some of the pictures to put in it. Thanks fir everything.
Hi there, thanks for commenting! I think when your fond of a certain era you think those things are prettier. The women were lovely in all eras but I have a big love for the looks of the 1940s. I’m just drawn to them more myself as well.
I’m so glad that you get to share your lovely home with friends over tea. That is what it’s all about, spending time together.
Also thank you for the kind comment about loving my emails. I’m so glad! It makes me even happier that you are printing off some of the photos and holding onto them. I LOVE THIS!
Have a lovely day!
Liz
