One of my favourite posts to put together was on ‘1940s Street Style‘. It was fun to browse images and see what everyday folks wore to go shopping, out to dinner, on vacation etc. No pajama pants and track pants here.
The response to this post was so positive, that I decided to do it again with a 1950s version featuring men, women and even children being their stylish selves.
Let the fashion inspiration begin!

A gingham dress in Atlantic City. Or is it? Maybe our lovely lady is actually in a 1950s photo booth in her hometown far far away? What do you think?

Hong Kong, 1950s. I am literally drooling over this woman’s look. I adore how she styled her Cheongsam dress. And can we talk about the mid century design in the background? Yooza! This photo is just the best.

Wow what style everyone had! I don’t know about you but I’m super inspired to change up my 1950s wardrobe after seeing these snapshots (Liz leaves blog to rummage thru closet….Ha Ha).

Wow I love all of these! That’s my era! I can’t get enough 50’s photos. These are particularly interesting though. Some are very typically 50’s (like the gals in white from ’55 and the guys on the car which I love!) But then there’s the gal in HK and the ladies at the camp who are more stylish and contemporary looking than most of the 50’s fashions I’ve seen in other photos. Their clothes would fit in with today’s, while the others look like they are definitely from the past. (Sorry for the long comment, I’m just 50’s obsessed! 🙂 )
Love long comments and so glad you enjoyed the photos. I really wanted to add the HK and the camp ladies because they were not the typical traditional look you mentioned. It’s important to show that the 1950s was pretty diverse in styles. The camp ladies is a look that is super popular right now, especially in the vintage scene and I was thrilled to have found the picture for people to make the correlation.

They’re all so gorgeous! I look at some of these photos and realize how much we incorporate fashion from the 50s into our outfits today and then some outfits are the complete opposite from what we wear. For instance, girls don’t really wear dresses nowadays, especially that big. Also, men don’t really wear things like biker or letterman jackets ( I wish they did though). It so interesting to see how fashion changes and yet stays the same in certain aspects.
Fashion styles do come and go and get incorporated in other ways, like you mentioned. I like it that way 🙂 As for the fancy dresses and letterman jackets you will see all of that at events like the big Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend (that just happened last weekend). You can overdose on cool 50’s fashions there and pretend like it’s a regular thing to put on a crinoline under your dress 🙂 hahaha
Really? I need to look into going to that someday. Thanks for letting me know about it.
YUP! In fact there is events like VIVA all over the world. Here are some links to them for browsing.
