This past weekend I was in Lake George, New York for a really fun Tiki Weekend called ‘Ohana on the Lake‘ and the hubby and I stayed down the street at a vintage motel called the ‘Windsor”. The sign alone was worth the 7 min walk to the event each day.
This recent motel stay inspired me to look into old vintage motel/ hotel ads of the Mid-Century (1950s & 1960s) to share with all of you. So let’s take a peek at what I found shall we?
Vintage Motel / Hotel Advertising
1950s & 1960s
First up! Do you know where the name “MOTEL” came from? It was coined by the owner of the Milestone Mo-Tel (an abbreviation of “motor hotel”) in San Luis Obispo, California.
In 1983 the Motel Inn’s Rose DuBois holds a postcard of the original structure.
Cool huh!? Okay back to the blog post…..

Wow awesome post! Love the 50’s ads. Yes, back then motels were cute, clean and fun! I didn’t know they even had those old signs anymore like the one you stayed at. Nifty! 🙂
Oh apparently they are all over if you start going down the rabbit holes of pictures on the web of current ones lol!
Liz, this is wonderful! Hot rod hotel ads!
Thanks so very much!
That is such an awesome hotel! I would stay in a classic hotel like that, I just never know where to find them. Welp, now I know of at least one.
This website at least for travel in the States should help! https://www.retroroadmap.com/explore/?type=place&category=stay&sort=latest
Awesome! Thank you.
Gosh, I can’t imagine staying at any of them. And yet, we did. My strongest memory is of the Motel Raphaël in Montreal in 1957. The motel is gone, but now they’re a Montreal group.
