Vintage Summer Outfit Inspiration-Tiki / Tropical / Hawaiian Dresses

Updated August 2024

Ohhhh I’m sooo happy that summer is finally here (well it will be here as of tomorrow but close enough). It was a long cold winter here in Toronto and I have been itching to get out into the warmer weather since the first day of winter. I will admit that jetting off to Spain for week 100% helped kick me into summer mode but I’m never fully happy till I hear “SUMMER IS HERE!” and that happens tomorrow! Yippee!!

So with the wonderful summer weather upon us that means it’s full on summer dress time for me and that includes some of my Tiki / Hawaiian dresses. Invited to a BBQ..why yes I will wear my pink flamingo tiki dress (seen below at Frankie’s Tiki Room in Las Vegas during Viva Rockabilly Weekend). Invited for drinks on a patio..why yes I will wear my two piece tiki outfit. etc. etc. You invite me to something I will try to “summer it up” as much as possible and that means for me lately that can lean towards a Tiki theme.

Tiki Style as seen at Frankie's Tiki Room in Las Vegas.

Sadly my closet is limited on space and my pocket-book is lean BUT if I had the space and money here are some of the “Tiki / Tropical / Hawaiian Dresses” I would have in my wardrobe (and some you could possibly own yourself if you quick enough to pick it up).

Tiki / Tropical / Hawaiian Dresses

What an enchanting oceanic beauty this is! It’s a rich cotton 1950s New Look Hawaiian halter sundress with 3D winged shelf bust, elastic ruching, and full circle skirt by “Made in Honolulu for Desmond’s of Southern California!”

Note: I have a very similar dress, while the pattern is different (mine are tropical flowers instead of seashells) the dress is close in style (not a match but you get the point). I have shared my dress below.

I’m a big fan of sometimes simple design makes a strong statement, and this 1950s dress does.

The below Jeffrey of California 1970s dress just SCREAMS 1940s/1950s. I’m so in love with the fruit basket pattern, madly in love.

The below dress is an “OuterLimitz” creation and I think I might actually need to buy this one. I currently own 2 dresses from this fantastic designer and will admit that I’m a huge fan. Isn’t that pattern wonderful?

Sarong dresses are a favorite of mine because they just such a flattering look on almost every shape. The below 1950’s “Sun Fashions of Hawaii” Tiki dress is wonderful example of this.

My VIVA Las Vegas Vacation-Day 4 (Saturday)

This is a continuation post on my recent trip to Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend #17. You can see Wednesday, Thursday, Friday by clicking on the day.

Saturday is Car Show day and BIG Car Show musical act day as well. My favorite day!

Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly weekend 17

This year the acts playing at the car show were:

Imelda May (headliner)

Lloyd Price

Lloyd Price Viva Las Vegas 17

There was also the Rockats who I saw last year and were awesome. Robert Gordon, Los Straitjackets, The Aquasonics Surf Band, and the Trashmen also took the stages at the Car show and I heard were fantastic. So lots of music to be had at the car show this year.

Friends enjoying the car show concert

I was really excited about Imelda and Lloyd and could not wait for when they took the stage. I have seen Imelda in Toronto and she was outstanding live so I was looking forward to seeing her play some of her new music and to a larger super excited crowd. I also LOVE the car show (I always see about 10 cars I want to take home lol) and the shopping that is to be had there as well so Saturday is my favorite day. BUT Sadly though I was still not 100% after getting food poisoning the night before so my favorite day was cut in half. I have limited personal pictures of the car show (I look like death) but a big thank you to my friends for documenting Saturday so I could show you it all here (Thank YouDean Villafuerte, Stephanie, and Liisa).

By the time the evening rolled around I was in much better shape and felt good enough to put on my vintage 1940s long gown and make myself look somewhat decent. Why? Because….The JIVE ACES were taking the stage in the main Ballroom and I was NOT going to miss this band.

So Happy! to have colour back in my face again 🙂

We then saw Crazy Cavan and the Rhythm Rockers and Gizzelle before jetting off to see another personal favorite band of mine “Jittery Jack with Miss Amy” from Boston! The Toronto Gang LOVES Jittery Jack and so we were out in full force to support their show and we were not disappointed.

And that my friends was the end of my Saturday at VIVA 17. Stay tuned for one more post on Sunday, when I was feeling 100% back to my old self!

Other Viva Posts: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday
