Vintage Photos of The Lindy Hop

May 26th is a very special day in the Lindy Hop Community (the original Swing Dance) as it’s ‘World Lindy Hop Day‘ AND the birthday of one of the founders of the dance, Frankie Manning. Many communities around the world will be celebrating and here in Toronto we are hosting a Big Band Swing Dance. I’m the emcee for the night and it’s going to be a wonderful night of music and dance.

For today’s Vintage Photo Tuesday (collection of vintage photo posts) I wanted to share images of the Lindy Hop/Jitterbug that myself and so many others have enjoyed over the years.

Let the dancing begin!

The History of Lindy Hop

It begins in the African American communities of Harlem, New York during the late 1920s in conjunction with swing jazz. Lindy Hop is closely related to earlier African American vernacular dances but quickly gained its own fame through dancers in films, performances, competitions, and professional dance troupes. It became especially popular in the 1930s with the upsurge of aerials. The popularity of Lindy Hop declined after World War II, and it converted to other forms of dancing, but it never disappeared during the decades between the 1940s and the 1980s until European and American dancers revived it starting from the beginning of the 1980s (Source).

The Vintage Images

Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers was a professional performing group of Savoy Ballroom swing dancers, started in 1935 by Herbert “Whitey” White. Frankie Manning mentioned above was part of this troupe.

The bride and her bridesmaids in the most beautiful gowns. LIKE WOW! And look at the hair? LOVE! I do think this is more late 1940s maybe early 1950s photo from the hairstyles & dress styles (the image is labeled 1950s).

In my vintage photo travels, I have never seen a 1950’s wedding dress with such an incredible scalloped neckline before. So very different, and I love it!

The most fashionable family/friends award goes to this brides entourage! High fives all around to keeping up with our bride. Plus we have another very different wedding gown. Almost looks like a pinafore style from what I can see (do you agree?).

I absolutely adore when men wear a white tuexedo jacket, black pants and bowtie. It’s such a handsome look and especially on ones wedding day.

The Wedding Cake. Sometimes good, sometimes bad and sometimes non existent (we skipped it at my wedding). Our newly married couple in this next photo, don’t really seem to know how to feel about what they eating. Maybe they are thinking they spent way to much money on something edible?

Not all brides need to wear a white dress on their wedding, a classy 2 piece suit will do the job as well.

Last but not least, I’m going to leave you with a photo that technically does not fit this weeks theme but it is just so awesome, I had to share it.

The 1950’s bridal shower. Oh my goodness! Those dresses! The doll cakes! The little umbrellas! Could this photo get any more fantastic? Love love love.
