Hi Readers! We are digging right back into the collection of vintage magazines I received from a fellow collector recently. The first post in this gold mine of magazines series was entitled “A Vintage Magazine: McCall’s April 1943 Edition“ (go check it out after this post if you did not see it) and today’s post is featuring the Vintage Advertising from inside a May 1939 Better Homes & Gardens Magazine (seen below).
Let’s see what fun items were being advertised in May’s edition…….
May 1939 Better Homes & Gardens Vintage Magazine
The Vintage Advertising
Campbell’s soup has always been a staple in my home growing up and even today. I just love it and it’s probably because I am a HUGE soup fan. Now the choices for soup brands are endless, but Campbell’s seems to still be “The Pick of the Pantry” for my homes, even today. Not just in 1939 as per this vintage ad.
General Electric Refrigerators in the 1930s were…”Beautiful”; “Thrify”; and “A Bargain!”. What a win for everyone!
1930s Vintage Ad for Hellman’s Real Mayonnaise featuring a Garden Patch Salad recipe AND tips on how to make your husband eat a salad (oh boy Ha Ha!).
Not a smoker myself, but you could not open any magazines from the mid century and earlier without seeing a cigarette ad, typically featuring a pretty woman. Our 1930s vintage ad for Chesterfield Cigarettes is no different.
“Hoover is Years Ahead!” – 1939 Hoover Vacuum vintage ad.
I’m a big fan of vintage cars from the late 1920s up to the end of the 1960s and the Hudson is right up there as a fav. Wow what a beauty of car! I can 100% believe the slogan “Once you drive a Hudson, No other car will do!”.
“Treat your Home like an old Friend”…give it lead paint! Dutch Boy Lead Paint vintage ad.
I love late 1930s -1950s Linoleum flooring, it’s just so darn fun! Nothing like what you see today.
More Linoleum flooring advertising (from Armstrong) featuring a 3-way kitchen! Wow Cool! Sewing corner, study corner and the kitchen. Mom can keep an eye on you at all times!
Did you know that Lysol Disinfectant has been in business since 1889 and was created by Gustav Raupenstrauch to help end a cholera epidemic in Germany? I did not! So I was quite surprised to see this cute vintage ad asking “how safe are a Mother’s Arms?” in this magazine.
In the 1939, Miracle Whip Salad Dressing was a fan favorite with all 5 of our women shoppers (especially Jean who brought up an angle nobody else saw…buy a larger size to save!).
Mmmmm an Orange Glace Cake vintage recipe using Pillsbury Best Flour (not dough just yet). “The best baking Prize is a delighted husband!”.
1939 Vintage Ad for Pittsuburgh Paint-Paint Yourself A New Home! Check out that bedroom with all the animal prints, how groovy for the late 1930s.
Do you need inspiration for you next home remodel? Then look no further then these 1930s rooms featuring Pittsburgh Glass. I LOVE the “Build the outdoors into your home” room # 1. What is your favourite? Share in the comments section below.
A bad breakfast really can throw off you whole day and is truly important to do well at your job. A Shredded Ralston breakfast cereal ad.
Here is another company I did not know was around in the 1930s..Simmons Beautyrest Mattresses. So cool! And this ad is so luxurious, makes me want to run out and buy one today!
“Every house needs Westinghouse”. Vintage ad for Westinghouse Electirc Ranges, which helps mom to be a “Swell Cook”.
This ad made me giggle, so I just had to share it with all of you. “Pineapple goes to a party…planned or impromptu”. You can never fail when you bring the Pineapple to the bridge parties, or to feed unexpected guests. Everyone will be happy!
The last vintage ad for this post is for ‘Heinz Pure Cider Vinegar’ featuring 4 different salad recipes you can enjoy with your vintage vinegar (say that 4 times fast. HAHA). Those salads look……interesting, but I’m sure they taste wonderful!
Well friends, that is the end of today’s post featuring some fun vintage advertising from my May 1939 Better Homes & Gardens vintage magazine. Share what your favourite advertisements were in the comment section below.
